Cold Prevention

Hopefully, I will not jinx myself and come down with a realIy bad cold infection this winter!  I have found a really effective way of staying well during the colds and flu season is the following:

Mother used to tell me to dress up nice and warm on particularly cold days. Good wisdom because, if your outer defences are down (Wei Qi in Chinese Medicine), then the cold pathogen has a better chance of entering the system. By the same token, it is especially important to get enough restful sleep. It is no accident that the winter months are the longest times of darkness. Ideally, we should be getting up when the sun rises and go to bed when the sun sets. This is not very practical in the fast-paced world in which we live. However, get enough rest and you stand a better chance of weathering any attacks on your immune system.

If I feel that I am coming down with a cold, I do the following immediately. I may wake up in the middle of the night with a scratchy throat. That for me is a warning sign that I am under attack. I reach for the following - I will increase my intake of Vitamin C supplement. I will take Echinacea Angustifolia Root Fluid Extract. I like the liquids because they are absorbed into the system more effectively. (Echinacea has been taken as a remedy by native Americans for over 10,000 years. If it didn't work, it would have fallen out of favour years ago) The last remedy that I take is Oil of Oregano. I like the Joy of the Mountain brand. Oil of Oregano is not very palatable, but this is a small price to pay for something that I find very effective. I stress the following, reach for these remedies immedately. Do not even wait until morning. You may find that this knocks out the pathogen before it takes hold.

Finally, get some exercise. If you don't have a gym membership, then go for brisk walks. Get the cardio-vascular rate up. It's a chance to blow away the cobwebs.
